HRStak / Free tools / Performance Review Generator
Turn short notes into a performance review draft with placeholders, or into a short self evaluation. Free for managers and HR teams, no account needed.
Free, no account and no credit card.
Quick answer. A good performance review covers results against goals, strengths with examples, areas to improve with support, and goals for the next period. This generator drafts that structure from your short notes. It uses only what you tell it, leaves bracketed placeholders where evidence is missing, never chooses a rating and never recommends pay or promotion. You add the examples and make the decisions.
Only the role is required. Short bullet style notes work best.
Don't enter names or personal details. Placeholders are added for you.

§01 How it works
The generator does the formatting and the first pass of wording. You supply the facts.
Pick the role, the review type and the rating scale, then add a few bullet style notes on strengths and areas to improve. No names or personal details.
The draft uses only your notes. Anything it could not know, such as names, dates, ratings and specific examples, comes back as a bracketed placeholder.
Replace each placeholder with a real example, choose the ratings yourself, and edit the wording until it sounds like you. Then share it the way your process requires.
§02 Guide
Most weak reviews fail the same test: a sentence that could not be backed up with a date and an example. Build each section around evidence.
Two to four sentences on the overall picture for the period. Say what stood out and what the main theme is.
What the goals were and what happened. Use the goals the person already knew about.
Two or three, each with one specific example and when it happened.
One to three, each with an example, what good would look like, and the support you will give.
Two or three goals the person can measure, agreed with them rather than handed down.
| Vague | More useful | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| "Great attitude." | "[Employee name] stayed calm and kept customers informed during [event] on [date]." | Describes behavior and gives a date. |
| "Needs to communicate better." | "Project updates were sent after the deadline on [number] occasions. The goal is an update by [day] each week." | States the gap and the standard. |
| "Not a team player." | "In [meeting or project], [describe what happened]. I would like to see [specific behavior]." | Replaces a label with something the person can change. |
| "Exceeded expectations." | "Delivered [result] against a goal of [goal], which exceeded the target for [period]." | Backs the rating with a result. |

§03 Example
Use this structure as is, or let the generator fill it from your notes. Every bracket is a fact only you can supply. The ratings are left for you to choose.
Fields like the employee name, dates and ratings should always be filled in by the manager, never guessed by a tool.
| Employee | [Employee name] | Manager | [Manager name] |
|---|---|---|---|
| Review period | [Start date] to [End date] | Date | [Date] |
[Two to four sentences on the overall picture for the period.] Overall rating: [Rating]
| Competency | Rating | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| [Competency 1] | [Rating] | [Evidence] |
| [Competency 2] | [Rating] | [Evidence] |
| [Competency 3] | [Rating] | [Evidence] |
[Space for the employee's comments]
[Employee signature and date] [Manager signature and date]
§04 Self evaluation
A self evaluation works best when it is specific and short. Lead with results, be honest about where you want to grow, and ask for the support you need.
Switch the generator above to self evaluation to turn your own notes into this shape. It writes in the first person and uses only what you give it.
This review covers [review period]. My focus in this period was [main focus areas].
[What would help, such as training, feedback or a project]
§05 Limits
It has no view of the employee's work. Examples, dates and numbers come only from your notes, and everything else is a placeholder.
Ratings are a manager's judgment. The draft leaves a rating placeholder for you to fill in.
Decisions about pay, promotion or employment stay with the manager and HR.

§06 Questions
Write about what the person did, how well, and what happens next. Cover results against goals, strengths with a specific example each, one to three areas to improve with the support you will give, and goals for the next period. Use dated examples you can point to, describe behavior rather than personality, and keep praise and criticism proportionate to what actually happened.
AI can draft the structure and tidy your wording, but it cannot know what your employee did. It has no access to their work, your notes or the context of the year, so anything it adds beyond your notes is a guess. That is why this generator only uses what you type, leaves placeholders where evidence is missing, never picks a rating, and never recommends pay or promotion. Treat the draft as a starting point, add the real examples, and decide the ratings yourself.
Long enough to be specific and short enough to be read. One to two pages is common for a manager review, and a self evaluation can be shorter. If a section has no real example behind it, shorten it instead of padding it.
List what you accomplished, with the result and the date where you can. Then name one or two areas where you want to grow, the support that would help, and goals for the next period. Use the self evaluation mode above to turn short notes into a draft, then add your own examples.
Use the scale your organization already uses. If you have a choice, pick one with clear written definitions for each level so two managers rating the same work land in the same place. A scale of three to five levels is common. The generator can leave the ratings blank for you to fill in.
Annual reviews are the most common, often with a mid year check in. A 90 day review is common for new hires. The right rhythm is the one your team will actually keep, with more frequent informal feedback in between.
Yes. There is no account to create. We ask for an email address so we can send you a copy of the draft, and you can generate up to three drafts a day.
We remove email addresses and phone numbers from your notes before they go to the AI model, and the draft comes back with placeholders for names and dates. We save your email, the review type and the role. We do not save the notes you type. Please do not enter names or personal details.
