Quick answer. A recruiter job description works when it says how many roles the person will fill, which kinds of roles they are and who owns the final hiring decision. An in-house recruiter works for one company and its hiring managers. The template below names the sourcing, screening and offer steps and leaves headcount, tools and pay in brackets.

§01 Template

The recruiter job description, ready to edit.

Copy the text, then fill in each highlighted bracket. A bracket marks a blank only you can fill, such as the pay, the hours or who the role reports to.

§02 Make it yours

Three decisions that make this posting specific to you.

State the volume and the type of roles

Filling 40 hourly roles a quarter is a different job than filling six engineers a year. Give the number of openings and the level of the roles, so candidates can match their experience.

Say how much sourcing is expected

Some recruiters mostly manage applicants who come in. Others search for people who have not applied. Say which you need, and which job boards or paid tools you provide.

Define who decides

Name who owns the final choice, who approves offers and what pay range the recruiter can offer without asking. Recruiters decide quickly when those rules are clear.

§03 Levels

How the recruiter posting changes by level.

Adjust the template for the level you are hiring. These are common patterns, so match them to how your own team defines each level.

LevelCommon titlesWhat changes in the posting
EntryRecruiting Coordinator, Junior Recruiter, SourcerSchedules interviews, posts jobs and sources candidates. A senior recruiter owns the relationship with hiring managers.
MidRecruiter, Talent Acquisition SpecialistRuns searches from intake to offer for several roles and works directly with hiring managers.
SeniorSenior Recruiter, Talent Acquisition Manager, Head of RecruitingHandles hard to fill and leadership roles, builds the process and tools, and manages other recruiters.

§04 Mistakes

Mistakes to cut from a recruiter posting.

Leaving out how many roles

A recruiter who expects three hires a year and finds forty will burn out. Give the real number.

Not naming the tools

Recruiters work in an applicant tracking system and a few sourcing tools. Name what you have and what budget exists for more.

Forgetting the candidate experience

Recruiters represent your company to every applicant. Ask about how they handle rejections and slow processes, and include it in the duties.

§05 Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What does a recruiter do?

An in-house recruiter finds, screens and helps hire people for one company. They work with hiring managers to define the role, source candidates, coordinate interviews and manage offers.

What is the difference between an in-house recruiter and an agency recruiter?

An in-house recruiter works for a single employer and hires for its teams. An agency recruiter works for a firm that fills roles for many client companies, usually for a fee.

What skills should I ask for in a recruiter?

Sourcing, phone screening, clear communication and organization. Add experience with your applicant tracking system and the types of roles you hire.

Should the posting include pay?

Candidates look for it first, and some places have rules about posting pay ranges. Check the rules where you hire, and put the range, and any bonus or commission, in the bracketed pay field of the template.
