Sales Manager Job Description Template

A sales manager job description template with brackets for team size, quota and pay structure. The compensation and the player coach question are the two parts most postings leave out.

Free to use. No account needed to copy the template.

Quick answer. A sales manager job description should say how many people the manager leads, what the team is measured on, whether the manager also carries their own deals, and how pay is structured. The template below asks for each of those, and leaves the numbers to you since only you know them.

§02 Make it yours

Three decisions that make this posting specific to you.

Describe the pay structure plainly

Say what is base and what is variable, what the variable pay depends on, and when it is paid. Candidates will ask in the first call, so put it in writing.

Decide if the manager sells

A player coach who also carries a number is a different job from a manager who only leads. State which one you want, and how the time is expected to split.

Name the sales motion

Short cycle transactional selling and long cycle enterprise selling need different leadership skills. One sentence on the cycle length and deal type is enough.

§03 Levels

How the sales manager posting changes by level.

Adjust the template for the level you are hiring. These are common patterns, so match them to how your own team defines each level.

LevelCommon titlesWhat changes in the posting
Team leadSales Team Lead, Assistant Sales ManagerLeads a small group and usually still carries a quota. Coaching is part of the job, but hiring and strategy sit with a manager.
ManagerSales ManagerOwns the team's results, hires and coaches, and reports forecasts to leadership.
DirectorRegional Sales Manager, Sales DirectorManages other managers, owns a region or segment plan, and works on strategy and budget with senior leadership.

§04 Mistakes

Mistakes to cut from a sales manager posting.

Leaving out how compensation works

A posting that says only "competitive pay" invites guessing. Describe the structure, even if you do not state final numbers.

Mixing manager and individual seller duties

If the role is half selling and half managing, write both clearly. Otherwise candidates will assume the wrong balance.

Setting targets in the posting that the team has not hit

If the number is aspirational, do not present it as typical. Candidates compare postings with what they hear in interviews.

§05 Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between a sales manager and a sales director?

A sales manager usually leads a team of sellers directly. A director usually leads managers and owns a larger plan, such as a region or a business line. Match the title to the number of layers below the person.

How should I describe commission in a job description?

Describe how it works in plain words: what it is based on, how often it is paid, and whether there is a cap. If you cannot share exact figures, share the structure and say the details will be discussed with finalists.

Should the job description list a quota?

Only if you are comfortable discussing it openly and it reflects what the team actually achieves. If not, describe the measures and say the specific targets are set with the new manager.

How many direct reports should a sales manager have?

There is no fixed number, and it depends on how much coaching each person needs and whether the manager sells too. State the real team size in the posting and be honest if it will grow.
